Mogadishu University (Arabic: جامعة مقديشو, Somali: Jaamacada Muqdisho) is a non-governmental university in Mogadishu, Somalia. As of 2011, its in the top 30 of African universities.[1]

The idea to establish a non-governmental educational institution started in June 1993, after which time it took five years to develop and open the university. On September 22, 1997, Mogadishu University (MU) opened its doors as a non-governmental, non-profit institution for higher learning, governed by a Board of Trustees and a University Council.
Mogadishu University has relocated all its activities to its newly built campus in the outskirts of Mogadishu. For this occasion, all students, teaching staff and administrations had gathered in the hall of the Faculty of Education Building to commemorate this historic event. Dr. Ali Sheikh Ahmed, the President of Mogadishu University, announced the beginning of the new academic year.
The campus was initiated with the assistance of the Islamic Development Bank in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, among other donors. In 2008, Mogadishu University opened another branch in Bosaso in the northeastern Puntland region of Somalia.
Mogadishu University has also been invited to join the Somali Aid Coordination Body (SACB) Educational Sector Committee. On September 21, 2004, the MU representatives Mr. Fathudin Mohamed, Westley Bii and Hussein M. Iman (MU Program Director) attended the SACB Educational Sector Committee meeting in Nairobi, Kenya.
During that sectoral meeting, the MU team presented the MU strategic plan for the period 2003 - 2007. The meeting participants from different international NGOs and UN Agencies placed many questions and discussed the MU plans. The participants also gave their constructive suggestions for improving the MU plans and warmly welcomed Mogadishu University to regularly attend the SACB Educational sector meetings.
In addition, two delegates from MU, Dr. Abdurahman Moalim Abdullahi, the Chairman of Board of Trustees and Dr. Abdullahi Farah Asseyr, MD, Adviser of the President and Head of Health Affairs at MU, paid 10 days' visit in Norway during which they signed a partnership agreement with the University of Tromsø.
The university accepts students who have graduated from secondary schools or those who have GCE equivalent certificates, making those individuals eligible to join the university. Prior to enrollment, students sit for qualifying examinations. If they pass, they then proceed to enroll in their program of study.
The University has several centers: the Center for Community Services and Continuing Education, the Institute for Somali Studies & Somali Center for Water and Environment, and the Institute of Languages. It also offers post-graduate programs in conjunction with the Omdurman Islamic University in Sudan.
The university has seven faculties, which award BA, BSC degrees, in addition to a nursing institute (High Institute of Nursing), which produces qualified nurses with a three year diploma. The university also established an Institute for Somali Studies (ISOS) and a Center for Continued Education, which coordinate public services through symposia, workshops and other management training courses.
